Study focuses on revitalization of Endicott-Johnson Industrial Spine By Steve Reilly Binghamton Press & Sun-Bulletin (NY) October 3, 2010JOHNSON CITY -- Eighty years ago, the mammoth brick structures dotting the village's landscape were perfect for Endicott-Johnson's state-of-the art shoe manufacturing operation. Today, the broken windows and ramshackle exteriors on many of these buildings are testament to their own obsolescence. While the Endicott-Johnson shoe empire buoyed the village's economy for generations, the decades after the shoe giant's demise have brought serious questions about what to do with its remains. Last October, the county released a 151-page study on the area -- dubbed the Endicott-Johnson Industrial Spine -- that focuses on transforming a 230 acre, 1.5 mile swath of post-industrial landscape by finding new uses for some of the properties. ...
