EP says transformation of former Cat land set to begin in spring

EAST PEORIA - Mayor Dave Mingus refers to it as a brownfield site now - 
the nearly 90-acre swath of land where Caterpillar Inc.'s first 
factories stood.

But in a matter of months - come spring 2011 - the barren land between 
West Washington and Camp streets will finally begin its transformation 
into the city's long-awaited dream of a new downtown. Shops, 
restaurants, offices, civic buildings, apartments and more are planned.

First to break ground on the property, dubbed Downtown 2010, will be a 
Holiday Inn & Suites Hotel and the Fondulac District Library. A 
financial tower, that will house a fourth Fondulac Bank facility on the 
first two floors and office space for yet-to-be-named tenants on a third 
and possible fourth floor, is also set to go up.

"It will be a downtown that is totally pedestrian-friendly. A downtown 
that will utilize the highest level of technological advantages. A 
downtown that will draw thousands of people to our community," said 
Mingus of the vision. "The future of East Peoria looks to be very 
promising and positive."
