Turning brown to green not so easy Siskyou Square site is mired in a swamp of development troubles By Jim Redden Portland Tribune (OR) November 11, 2010It has become virtually an article of faith among urban planners that so-called "brownfields" are economic development opportunities waiting to happen. ...The vacant 26-acre parcel on Northeast 82nd Avenue across from Madison High School is one of the largest parcels of undeveloped property in the city limits. It is along a major transportation corridor close to Interstate 84, Interstate 205 and the Portland International Airport. It has also been empty for years. The site is a former landfill. Organic materials buried there generate methane gas. But owner Mike Hashem spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on a state-approved venting system to make it safe. Despite that, Hashem is auctioning the property, cutting the price from $7.2 million to $4.65 million just to sell it. ...
