GOWANUS - After several years of waiting since the project was first announced in 2006 - and after the cleanup of its "brownfield site" was completed this past summer - Whole Foods is now officially moving forward with its first-ever Brooklyn store on Third Avenue and Third Street on the banks of the Gowanus Canal.

The natural-foods supermarket chain is planning to apply to the Board of Standards and Appeals (BSA), which reviews and decides on zoning variances and special permits, within the next two months. Once the chain files with BSA, then it will schedule meetings with Community Board 6 and local organizations.

A source within the company said that this process would take about 10 months, and groundbreaking is expected by 2012. Like most of the land along the Gowanus, the site was originally an industrial one.
