Future of a Key Parcel Is a Washington Mystery By Jack Coraggio Litchfield County Times (CT) December 23, 2010WASHINGTON - Anyone passing through Washington Depot recently may have observed more activity at the long vacant site of a former gas station than during any time since it was actually a gas station. While the purpose of the work is known, it's also symbolic of the greatest real estate mystery in town - what the future holds for the former Texaco station. Sitting squarely in Washington Depot, adjacent to Bryan Memorial Town Hall, the former fueling station and garage has been vacant for the better part of five years. Until this fall, activity on the property has been relatively measured, but a private environmental cleanup effort recently saw activity increase precipitously. It was a service station for more than 50 years, and the soil around the property, owned by John Ficalora of the New York-based Afco Enterprises, was a bit contaminated. That much is known. Also, given its position relative to the area's watershed (and practically abutting the Shepaug River), the town's land-use office said the state Department of Environmental Protection won't allow another gas station. ...
