CMS Land officials share perspective on project to date; see treatment plant as best solution

For the past six years, environmental clean-up efforts have been underway on the southern shore of Little Traverse Bay following the discovery of high pH chemical readings in the shoreline waters of the Bay Harbor development in 2004. Cement kiln dust (CKD), left over from cement plant operations between 1904-1980, is the apparent cause of the contamination, created when water passes through the CKD and into the bay. Increased levels of Mercury are also a byproduct of the CKD.

Collection and clean-up of the contamination has been ongoing, critically examined and alternatives have been explored and reviewed during the past few years. There remains debate over the best and final solution to the problem, but the process does seem to be coming to a head with plans for a treatment plant on-site nearing apparent approval.
