Contaminated West Bremerton property could become Superfund site Staff Reports Kitsap Sun (WA) January 22, 2011BREMERTON - An old industrial site in West Bremerton, found to be heavily contaminated with cancer-causing chemicals, could become a federal Superfund site, leading to a massive environmental investigation. The Old Bremerton Gasworks site, a 3.7-acre waterfront property between Pennsylvania and Thompson avenues, could become the first site in Washington state to be added to the Superfund List since 2007. That’s when the 27-acre Lockheed-West Seattle site was designated for federal oversight by the Environmental Protection Agency. The Old Bremerton Gasworks site became contaminated with a variety of hydrocarbons over many years. Some of the worst compounds probably spilled from a coal-gasification plant that operated there from the 1930s into the 1950s, according to studies conducted so far. ...
