Subdivision plans proceed amid DEQ soil-contamination concerns

Plans for a proposed subdivision on 325 acres of land that includes the 
former Franklin Mine are moving forward, though the Department of 
Environmental Quality has expressed concerns about soil contamination in 
the area.

The Cornerstone Village Estates subdivision would sit east of Head Lane 
and south of Franklin Mine Road, on the south end of the Scratchgravel 
Hills. Preliminary plans for the site would divide the land into 33 lots 
between five and 10.3 acres in size, each for a single-family home. This 
is the third vision for the area that the applicant, Helena Christian 
School, has proposed since acquiring the property six years ago. A 2006 
plan to include 208 homes, parkland and a private school on the land had 
received preliminary subdivision approval. A 2008 plan that upped the 
number of homes to 800 never made it to a planning board hearing.
