Pompton Lakes gets hope from EPA BY JAMES M. O'NEILL The Record (NJ) January 29, 2011The Obama administration is weighing whether to include vapor intrusion as a factor when naming contaminated sites to the Superfund list — a move that could help Pompton Lakes residents in their effort to impose Superfund status on a local DuPont site. DuPont's former munitions facility has been on the state's contaminated site list since the 1980s, but residents have grown more vocal about having it named a Superfund site in the effort to get it cleaned up. The cancer-causing solvents PCE and TCE were used for decades on the DuPont site but migrated off the property in a groundwater plume that sits under about 450 nearby homes. The state discovered two years ago that the solvents were vaporizing up through the soil and into some homes, a process called vapor intrusion. DuPont has been installing vapor mitigation systems on the homes, but the polluted groundwater still needs to get cleaned up. ...
