EPA issues final NFR for Cook Canton plant

CANTON - In 2004, Canton officials celebrated getting a draft "no  
further remediation" letter from the state Environmental Protection  
Agency, indicating no further cleanup was required for the northeast  
corner of the former International Harvester plant site. That cleared  
the area for development.
Now that area has been developed with construction of the Cook Canton  
medical-device production facility. The Cook plant apparently was  
built according to standards. On Tuesday, April 12, the city received  
from the EPA a final no-further remediation letter for the property.  
It was the first such official endorsement issued for any part of the  
IH site.


"It's been 14 years in the making since the fire" on Aug. 6, 1997  
destroyed most of the plant, said City Attorney Chrissie Peterson on  
Thursday. She added the EPA file had still referred to the old IH  
property as the CyberAmerica site. CyberAmerica was the name of the  
latest operation at the plant site prior to the fire.
