After years of promises and $180 million, Newtown still waits for
revival
By J. DAVID McSWANE Sarasota Herald-Tribune (FL) May 8, 2011SARASOTA - Ten years ago, city officials paid a consultant $150,000 to draft a bold plan to do one thing: fix Newtown. The plan called for a business hub - a "catalyst project" - to inject prosperity into Martin Luther King Jr. Way, the heart of Sarasota's economically languishing black community. It would become a critical goal in Sarasota's push to lure businesses and jobs to drive out the poverty, blight and crime that have long plagued Newtown. As then-Mayor Carolyn Mason described it in 2002: "This is going to be the blueprint by which the development will take place." ...
