Governor Timothy Murray, Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno join WMECo in groundbreaking ceremony SPRINGFIELD, Mass.,--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Western Massachusetts Electric Company (WMECo) today formally launched development of a large-scale solar energy facility in the Indian Orchard section of Springfield. The selected site - owned by the Springfield Redevelopment Authority - encompasses 12 acres and will accommodate 8,200 solar panels and produce 2.2 MW of electricity. WMECo officials joined local and state officials in announcing the agreement to develop the former foundry site into a clean, renewable energy facility. Upon completion, the Indian Orchard facility will join WMECo’s Silver Lake Solar Facility in Pittsfield as one of the largest in the Northeast region. The project is expected to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2011. "WMECo is continuing to expand the horizons of large scale solar development," said Peter J.
