Cleanup should give Queen Street site a future By Richie Rathsack Record-Journal (CT) May 16, 2011 11:30 pmSOUTHINGTON - Hidden behind stores on Queen Street is a little- noticed factory building, abandoned for years. Town officials were happy to see an environmental cleanup sign appear near the driveway to the property, especially after approving a tax abatement package last week to encourage the work. Economic Development Coordinator Louis Perillo III said contaminated sites like that are difficult to market due to the cost of remediation. "I think this one is huge for us," Perillo said. "The size of the parcel, the level of contamination, two acres on Queen Street; the developer had mentioned 30,000 square feet of retail space. We think that would add to Queen Street's relative strength." The property was once home to the Forestville Industrial Plating Co., which specialized in plating metal springs and screws, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency website. There was a lagoon on site that contained plating wastes and metal hydroxide sludge, according to the EPA. ...
