DEP approves Raytheon cleanup plan, 16 years later

Two decades after toxic chemicals were discovered in the ground and  
16 years after their removal was ordered, the Florida Department of  
Environmental Protection has given its approval to a proposal by the  
Raytheon Co. to do the work.

In the years since DEP began enforcement action in the case, a  
chemical plume has spread under parks, playgrounds and homes and  
tainted dozens of private irrigation wells around the site of a  
vacant defense plant at 1501 72nd St. N. in St. Petersburg.

Many people living there were unaware of the spreading plume until it  
was revealed in an 8 On Your Side investigation three years ago.  
Testing followed, showing dozens of private irrigation wells tainted  
by TCE, 1-4 Dioxane and other chemicals in the plume.

Now, for the first time, Raytheon - which bought the pollution  
problem when it purchased the E-Systems property in 1995 - has a  
green light to remove the plume.
