Davis Kalamazoo Gazette (MI) July 5, 2011KALAMAZOO - Totally removing pollutants from the former Allied Paper landfill is the only clean-up option the Kalamazoo City Commission wants the feds to pursue, the city leaders unanimously asserted in a resolution passed tonight. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is considering several alternatives for the long-contaminated property between Alcott and Cork streets, which is part of the 80-mile Allied Paper/Portage Creek/ Kalamazoo River Superfund site. The EPA could make its determination as early this fall on options that include total removal of the polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), doing nothing at all or some variation of leaving the pollutants on site and capping the area. The property is laden with an estimated 1.5 million cubic yards of PCB-contaminated, paper-mill residuals and other waste. ...
