The leak is contaminating dozens of wells south of Aberdeen, representatives from the Environmental Protection Agency said at a meeting Wednesday night. Two wells that pump water into Aberdeen's town water supply are among the sites that have seen elevated levels of trichloroethene, or TCE. In 2010, one well registered 7.8 parts per billion. Federal maximum standards are 5 parts per billion. State water quality restrictions are even more stringent at 3 parts per billion. ...The EPA suspects the contamination stems from the former Powder Metal Products products building off N.C. 211 near Lockey Drive, which used TCE to clean metal parts between 1980 and 1995.
