Chester Brownfield Cleanup Could Begin Next Year State Journal (WV) October 5, 2011The Taylor, Smith and Taylor pottery plant closed in 1981. Now the site is being cleaned up for reuse. If all goes as planned, the new owners of a brownfield site in Chester could begin clearing the site in 2012. "That's best case scenario," said Pat Ford, executive director of the Business Development Corp. of the Northern Panhandle. "I would say worst-case scenario, depending on the timeliness of us filing our grant applications with U.S. EPA and if we're fortunate to get any money, we might be looking at two-and-a-half to three years. But there's a great chance that the (contaminants) could start going off site within 12-18 months." The BDC purchased the former Taylor, Smith and Taylor plant in July for $125,000. A working pottery plant for 80 years, it closed in 1981. ...
