Pender Commerce Park to be cleaned under brownfield plan

A vacant and contaminated property straddling Pender and New Hanover counties will be cleaned and redeveloped for future industrial use under the state's Brownfields Program, according to county officials.

The 400-acre tract of land, at 110 Vitamin Drive along U.S. 421 North, encompasses two separate properties, purchased by Pender County at different times for a total of about $6 million. The property – known as Pender Commerce Park – includes the former site of the BASF Corp., which manufactured vitamin products and left the land with both groundwater and soil contamination, according to state documents.
