Plans for retail center near UT campus unveiled WBIR TV-10 News (Knoxville, TN) January 3, 2012Two nation-wide stores will soon serve thousands of people who live and work in Downtown Knoxville. They'll be part of a new retail development set to go up near the UT campus. A team of local developers is purchasing the old Fulton Bellows manufacturing site that sits next to the University. Local developers, Bud Cullom, Mike McGuffin and Jim Harrison have put a deal together that will allow them to build the 210,000 square foot University Commons shopping center on the property. The first two tenants to sign on are a Publix grocery store and a Walmart, which will sell general merchandise and no groceries. The development also has room for several smaller businesses along the store fronts. ...Before the new buildings can go up, the developers have to deal with some environmental issues left over from decades of manufacturing on the property. Harrison said it is a Brownfield and they have to move as little dirt as possible. "You basically have to encapsulate the entire land with a parking deck that has a vapor barrier underneath," explained Harrison. ...
