Mayors discuss economic development By LARRY ESKRIDGE Canton Daily Ledger (IL) January 6, 2012CANTON - When Canton Mayor Kevin Meade and Freeport Mayor George Gaulrapp met Thursday, they discovered they shared an important trait. Both are Green Bay Packer fans. But that was only the beginning of their similarities.Gaulrapp noted Freeport was looking to develop property in his city, the 465,000 square foot Rawleigh Complex, and was told by their consultants, Vandewalle and Associates, to visit Canton to study how the city handled a comparable situation with the former International Harvester plant. The building, which was used for making household goods and cure-alls, according to Gaulrapp, also had historical significance for Freeport. Gaulrapp said the building, which has been empty since the mid 1980s, was "rock solid," with much of the cleanup work already done, and that Freeport was looking for ways to continue to improve the site. Earlier plans to develop the property had fallen through. ...
