NYS tried doing this for a few sites including the Hopewell Precision site and the IBM site in Endicott. Participation was very low. Only about 7-10% answered. People felt insecure sending information to the DOH because they did not know what would be done with this information.

I was upset that so few people wanted to be in the survey. I wish the folks in Pompton better results.

Health survey underway in Pompton Lakes

FEBRUARY 5, 2012

Residents who live in the area of contaminated underground water in the borough have been asked to participate in a health survey.

The New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS) will conduct the survey. Residents will be notified about the survey by mail before it arrives.

In late 2009, a DHSS analysis revealed that there were elevated rates of kidney cancer among women and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma among men who lived above the local contaminated groundwater between 1979 and 2006.

DuPont contaminated the area when it operated a munitions factory in the borough from 1902 to 1994.
