Lake County cleanup funds could be shifted to housing assistance By Amy Alderman Chicago Tribune April 1, 2012Funds for a nearly defunct program formed to clean up blighted or abandoned sites in Lake County could be shifted to help those in need of housing assistance, according to county officials. Too many projects weren't completed through the Lake County Brownfield Program, leaving money sitting in the county's coffers, officials said. The Lake County Board created the local brownfield program in 2000 to help municipalities and townships with cleaning up abandoned sites or underused facilities that are environmentally contaminated, according to county documents. "The original intent was to provide funding to shovel-ready sites that would spur economic development," said Dusty Powell, Lake County zoning administrator. "I think that philosophy went by the wayside." ...
