EPA plans tests in Caledonia Officials reverse course on toxic plume Steve Orr Rochester Democrat and Chronicle (NY) April 12, 2012Reversing course, federal officials said Thursday that they would order tests to ensure a plume of toxic solvents isn't impacting a part of the village of Caledonia in Livingston County that includes a school campus. Officials said several weeks ago that the tests weren't necessary, but changed their opinion following a Democrat and Chronicle story that prompted calls from public officials. The underground plume of trichloroethene, or TCE, originates four miles east of the village in a rural part of Le Roy, Genesee County. As much as 35,000 gallons of TCE were released there during a 1970 train derailment and have percolated through groundwater and rock ever since. ...
