EPA plans tests in Caledonia
Officials reverse course on toxic plume

Reversing course, federal officials said Thursday that they would order tests to ensure a plume of toxic solvents isn't impacting a part of the village of Caledonia in Livingston County that includes a school campus.

Officials said several weeks ago that the tests weren't necessary, but changed their opinion following a Democrat and Chronicle story that prompted calls from public officials.

The underground plume of trichloroethene, or TCE, originates four miles east of the village in a rural part of Le Roy, Genesee County. As much as 35,000 gallons of TCE were released there during a 1970 train derailment and have percolated through groundwater and rock ever since.
