By Evan Brandt Pottstown Mercury (PA) April 18, 2012NEW HANOVER - State officials are still unsure how a complicated mixture of dangerous organic chemicals made their way into a handful of drinking water wells along Route 663 they told an audience of roughly 70 residents and officials who attended a public hearing Tuesday night at Boyertown Area Junior High East. Officials from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection are focusing on the site of the former Good Oil Company, near the intersection of Layfield and Hoffmansville road, where dozens of tanks ranging in size and contents have been located for years. While they were not surprised to find contaminants associated with petroleum products - like benzene and MTBE - they are less sure how a concentration of chemicals known as “volatile organic compounds” found their way into the water on the site, as well as into five wells in nearby homes. ...
