Work on historic Gainesville Depot progresses as city develops its
central park
By Christopher Curry Gainesville Sun (FL) April 30, 2012The large hill of excavated soil that long stood in a fenced area off South Main Street and Southwest Depot Avenue is gone. Heavy dump trucks still rumble between smaller mounds as the cleanup of arsenic-contaminated soil continues at this 32-acre park and brownfield site south of downtown that once was home to the Gainesville Gas Co. About 2½ years after the cleanup started, city officials say the transformation of this former industrial site into Gainesville's own Central Park remains about 2½ years away from completion. ...
