Toxic chemicals found next to Shelby Township plant By JAMESON COOK Shelby Township Source Newspapers (MI) July 24, 2012Toxic chemicals have been found in groundwater that migrated from the former Visteon plant in Shelby Township and it could cost $57 million to clean up, a scientist says. The chemical TCE, a carcinogen, and TCA, which causes health problems, have contaminated an estimated 78 million gallons of water in two areas on vacant land east of the plant owned by Grand Sakwa, a development company. The findings are based on samples from the parcel taken this spring, according to James Dragun, a prominent expert in chemicals' impact on the environment. He was hired by Grand Sakwa and Shelby Township. The chemicals, found within 100 feet of the surface, are typically used as degreasers, Dragun said. The chemicals' presence was revealed July 23 as part of a legal dispute involving several companies over the demolition of the plant, located near 23 Mile and Mound roads. Indiana Metals, a firm that purchases and redevelops industrial property, bought the 207-acre parcel last year and is in the process of demolishing the structure. Ford Motor Co., the former owner, tried in court to have information about potential contaminants on its property suppressed,...
