Official: DEC communicated with residents about Air Brake contamination By CRAIG FOX WATERTOWN DAILY TIMES (NY) August 25, 2012A state Department of Environmental Conservation spokeswoman has defended the way agency officials communicated with the public about the contamination that was dumped from the former New York Air Brake site on Starbuck Avenue. On Friday, DEC spokeswoman Charleissa King wrote in an email message that the agency held a series of meetings before a soil investigation of the Air Brake site and the surrounding neighborhood was conducted in 2008. DEC also held a meeting to release its findings, she said. The 2008 study determined unacceptable levels of trichloroethylene, or TCE - an industrial solvent used at the New York Air Brake facility decades ago - was found in four nearby buildings and a home at 431 Hoard St. "The DEC did extensive outreach to the community," Ms. King wrote. ...
