Pittsford canal apartment complex close to getting OK from village by Megan DeMarco Rochester Democrat and Chronicle (NY) September 22, 2012PITTSFORD - A vacant brownfield site on the Erie Canal is inching closer to seeing a major makeover that has been in the works for years. After two years of public meetings - some contentious - and several phases of a plan to turn an old Monoco Oil asphalt plant into a swanky apartment complex, village officials will likely approve a special use permit for the site in October. A public hearing is set for Monday. The developer, Pittsford Canalside Properties LLC, would still need approval from the planning and architectural preservation boards, but Mayor Bob Corby said he expects both will allow the project to proceed. Construction on the $30 million project could begin as early as the spring, after environmental cleanup of the site at 75 Monroe Ave. is complete. "This project is going to be award-winning," said Chris DiMarzo, president of Mark IV Enterprises, which owns Pittsford Canalside Properties. "We envision turning an (eyesore) literally right now - a place where Pittsford students go and do drugs and start fires - to a reclaimed residential community at the gateway to the village." ...
