Denver Brownfield Program catalyst to revitalization of Colfax

The Colfax Mainstreet Coalition (CMC) is a partnership between the  
City and County of Denver, the City of Lakewood, and the Denver Urban  
Renewal Authority (DURA). The partnership received an EPA Brownfields  
Assessment Grant which will be used to conduct brownfield assessments  
in order to assist in the the revitalization of Colfax Avenue. In  
2012, the Coalition was awarded $900,000 for the assessment of  
Colfax. The grant will be used to fund environmental site assessments  
(ESA's) on both public and private brownfield properties within the  
project boundaries. These site assessments will help determine the  
extent of environmental contamination.

This teamwork philosophy was created from the beginning of the City  
and County of Denver's formation of the the Brownfields Program.  
Typically the brownfields program in other communities is handled by  
one agency, such as the Economic Development agency. For Denver, a  
partnership between the Economic Development Division and the  
Environmental Health Division was created to work in concert to  
oversee the Denver Brownfields Program.
