State tests wells near former Square D plant by Clarke Morrison Asheville Citizen-Times (NC) PRIL 8, 2013 ASHEVILLE - State environmental officials are testing wells around the former Square D plant to determine if they have been tainted by industrial contaminants. The work is part of ongoing monitoring efforts at the Bingham Road site where toxic solvents have contaminated the groundwater, according to the N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources. While the area around the facility is served by the Asheville water system, department workers are attempting to locate any wells used as drinking water sources within a half mile of the former plant, spokeswoman Cathy Akroyd said.
