Licking County carcinogen plume moving

ODOT buying two more houses to mitigate contamination

NEWARK - New test results released by the Ohio Department of Transportation appear to support the department's theory that a plume of chemicals from a former testing plant is moving underground to the south and east.

Deputy Director Joe Rutherford said the chemicals, mainly trichloroethylene, a carcinogen, seeped into groundwater under James and South Pine streets. The chemicals were used at the testing plant before people knew TCE was a carcinogen.

In September, eight homes were designated as being located over the plume and ODOT made plans to buy those properties from the homeowners and provide them with relocation costs. The number of properties has increased to 10, Rutherford said.
