State DEQ: Brownfield loan program underused

The state has close to $5 million available to loan to clean up old  
gas stations, trucking centers and other contaminated sites for  
redevelopment.

But it doesn't have as many takers as it would like. It says the  
economy has left some local governments skittish about applying.

The Department of Environmental Quality offers a brownfield loan  
program for municipalities to borrow money and front it to developers  
for expensive contamination cleanup. But many governments are averse  
to taking on additional financial risk when their general fund  
budgets are struggling due to continued declining property tax  
collections and rising costs, said Sue Erickson, assistant division  
chief for the DEQ’s remediation and redevelopment division.
