Vernon Company Receives $2 Million Loan For Hockanum Mill Cleanup By SUZANNE CARLSON The Hartford Courant April 22, 2013VERNON - Kaplan Mill Works LLC has received a $2 million loan from the state to clean up the Hockanum Mills brownfield site so it can be redeveloped for commercial use. The site, at 200 West Main St., includes 11 mill buildings on 9.38 acres. Economic Development Coordinator Shawn Gately said two of the buildings have become dilapidated and collapsed and will probably be removed, but the other nine buildings will be restored with an eye to historical integrity. Ken Kaplan, owner of Kaplan Computers, established Kaplan Mill Works as a real estate holding company for the property, which is contaminated with lead paint, asbestos and other industrial pollutants, Gately said. Kaplan, who purchased the property's tax liens after former developers essentially abandoned their renovation, said he plans to use about $400,000 for the cleanup and the rest of the long-term, low- interest state loan to renovate existing buildings. ...
