EPA Identifies Hidden Lane Landfill Groundwater Contamination Residents Await Clean Up Plan by Erika Jacobson Moore Leesburg Today (VA) May 24, 2013 It has been almost 25 years since levels of the hazardous carcinogen Trichloroethylene were detected in residential wells surrounding the Hidden Lane landfill in Sterling, but Broad Run Farm residents are still likely years away from a remediation solution. During a informational open house held Tuesday night residents were able to view the results of the Environmental Protection Agency’s groundwater investigation at the landfill, which was added to the EPA’s Superfund National Priority List in 2008. The next year, the EPA began its monitoring of 19 sampling wells, some up to 500-feet deep, and now the federal agency believes it knows the size and location of the plume of contaminated groundwater. Hidden Lane, an unlined landfill, was closed by the county government in 1984.
