WATER QUALITY: Agencies to collaborate on plume cleanupThe toxic solvent TCE is spreading underground from Ontario and puts Riverside Co. water at risk BY SANDRA STOKLEY Riverside Press-Enterprise (CA) May 31, 2013Six Inland water providers have drafted an agreement to work together to clean up cancer-causing contamination believed to be a threat to wells supplying hundreds of thousands of residents. The underground pollution, known as the South Archibald Trichloroethylene Plume, is concentrated in the city of Ontario, just south of Ontario International Airport and west of Interstate 15. Trichloroethylene, or TCE, is an industrial solvent and degreaser. Known to cause cancer, TCE fell out of use in the 1980s because of its toxicity. Officials believe the plume is inching in a southerly direction and fear it could contaminate wells pumped by the Chino Basin Desalter Authority, a water source for Norco, Eastvale, Jurupa Valley, Ontario, Chino, Chino Hills and Western Municipal Water District. ...
