Company tapped to pay for $79 million cleanup of Raritan Bay
superfund site files lawsuit
By Seth Augenstein Newark Star-Ledger (NJ) June 6, 2013OLD BRIDGE - A company that was singled out by the Environmental Protection Agency to pay for the $79 million cleanup of the Raritan Bay Slag Superfund site filed a federal lawsuit Wednesday, claiming it only provided the material but never dumped the contamination at the site. NL Industries, named by the EPA last year as the only potentially- responsible party for the massive cleanup, claims that the lead from blast-furnace bottoms at their former Perth Amboy site was taken to the Old Bridge and Sayreville shoreline with full knowledge of local and even federal officials. The Texas-based company claims it didn't decide to use lead to bolster the shoreline - and that the “"ion's share" of the responsibility belongs to the public officials who came up with the plan and carried it out. ...
