GM Tonawanda going for green

Use of the word "plant" when referring to the General Motors Co. Tonawanda Engine facility took on a different meaning on June 14, when 100 students planted shrubs and plant seedlings that will help transform old brownfield space into a green area that will become a wildlife habitat.

The area to be planted within the 190-acre property was once occupied by the GM (NYSE:GM, TSX: GMM) Tonawanda Foundry. Built in the mid-1950's, the 10-acre area was decommissioned and left idle after its last pour in 1984. When the Tonawanda Engine plant was awarded the Ecotec 2.2L business in 1997, the building was torn down to make room for a 100,000 square foot shipping dock and a rail spur required for the new engine program.
