Teachers, students at contaminated PS 51 faced increased risk of cancer, says state Health Department report

Also points to problems with immune and central nervous systems, but stops short of backing claims of teacher Nancy Tomassi, who blamed lost pregnancy on effects of her exposure to toxic trichloroethylene, or TCE, in shuttered Bedford Park school.

A new report on the health effects of exposure to a toxic chemical in a now-shuttered Bronx school appear to confirm what teachers and parents have been charging all along.

Those who worked and attended classes in the tainted Bedford Park building were placed at increased risk for health problems, it was revealed.

About 50 parents and teachers from Public School 51 attended a meeting Monday at St. Philip Neri School to discuss the findings discussed in a draft of the report with representatives from the Department of Education and the city and state health departments.

The draft said that kids and adults exposed to high levels of trichloroethylene, or TC E, were placed at minimal risk of developing cancer and other health problems - including dysfunctional immune and central nervous systems - associated with exposure.
