Texas Township man gets probation, ordered to pay $2.7 million in
restitution in toxic barrel case
By Rex Hall Jr. Kalamazoo Gazette (MI) August 5, 2013KALAMAZOO, MI -- He'll spend no time in jail, but a Texas Township man who stored hundreds of barrels of toxic substances on his property was ordered Monday to serve five years of probation and to pay $2.7 million in restitution for the chemical cleanup that came following a 2008 pole-barn fire. "What you did does generate concern for a community," Kalamazoo County Circuit Judge J. Richardson Johnson told Donald Haugen. "Just about everyone in this community gets their drinking water from groundwater and there's a heightened concern about what goes into the soil and, ultimately, the groundwater." ...MLive/Kalamazoo Gazette reported in January 2009 that Haugen operated a business near Ann Arbor in 1992 that was the site of a chemical explosion.
