What's below the Canandaigua lakefront?What past generations buried along the lakefront remains a mystery - a mystery that could cause headaches for future developments By Scott Pukos MPN Now (NY) August 11, 2013Canandaigua, N.Y. - Beneath the surface of the Canandaigua lakefront lies a potential problem. While countless residents, tourists and visitors have walked along Lakeshore Drive for decades, no one can identify all that lies beneath the green grass, the paved properties and the popular park. "It's still a mystery because no one really recorded anything," City of Canandaigua Historian Lynn Paulson said, referring to material that was put into the ground along the lakefront prior to World War II. With two major lakefront projects on the horizon - the $100 million North Shore mixed residential and commercial development proposed across from Kershaw Park and a five-story hotel proposed at the former Steamboat Landing site - whatever is in the ground could increase costs and delay construction. ...
