Area around Middleville Tannery Dump deemed safe By AMANDA FRIES Utica Observer-Dispatch (NY) August 24, 2013 NORWAY - Concern of contaminated groundwater in the area has been dispelled. State Department of Health spokesman Jeffrey Hammond said the state Department of Environmental Conservation collected soil, sediment, surface water and groundwater samples from the Middleville Tannery Dump in Norway in December 2012 and January 2013. "A review of the samples ... showed there is no evidence that groundwater contamination is moving offsite," Hammond said in an email. The Military Road site previously had been investigated by the DEC in 1989 and then by the Environmental Protection Agency in 2005.
