Communities home in on brownfield revitalization

WEST LAFAYETTE - Although West Lafayette has protections in place, a  
carcinogenic agent that has been making its way toward the village  
aquifer is still a concern.

The substance - trichloroethene, or TCE for short - is leftover from  
the old Penn-Michigan plant.

Statewide, officials are homing in on cleaning up contaminated former  
industrial sites such as the Penn-Michigan plant. The sites are a  
concern because of the environmental problems they can leave behind  
long after the doors are closed.

The sites are often referred to as brownfields, and there are more  
than 250 in the state, according to a database maintained by the Ohio  
Environmental Protection Agency. That list is not comprehensive,  
however. because there’s no requirement for officials to report to  
the EPA if they believe their site might be a brownfield.

The Penn-Michigan plant, for example, is not in that particular  
database.
