EPA reiterates new Haverford YMCA is safe

HAVERFORD - When the new Haverford Area YMCA opens its doors at 891 N. Eagle Road today, it will transform a long fallow swath of land into a bustling and vibrant community recreation center. The 75,000-square foot state of the art facility, to include a 10,000-square foot Wellness Center, gymnasium, three pools, indoor track and more, is situated on the site of the former Philadelphia Chewing Gum factory and within the area affected by the Havertown PCP Superfund site, under remediation by EPA since the 1980s.

Although concerns have been raised at township meetings about whether this site can provide a safe and healthful environment for users, EPA Region III Remedial Project Manager Joshua Barber says there is “no cause for concern whatsoever.”

Barber pointed out, however, that EPA conducted a vapor intrusion assessment in 2011. Based on air samples obtained from 10 residences, EPA concluded that neither TCE nor its breakdown products were found in “any living space indoor air.” Although TCE was detected in one sub-slab sample and one crawlspace, EPA reported that results “fell within the EPA acceptable risk range.”
