Subject: | [CPEO-BIF] COLLECTING INFORMATION ON THE CONSEQUENCES OF THE FEDERAL SHUTDOWN |
Please excuse redundant postings. – LSThis week I was supposed to fly to the East Coast for meetings that would have included an EPA Public Information session in Pompton Lakes, New Jersey and a Restoration Advisory Board meeting at Ft. Monmouth, also in New Jersey. Both were cancelled, so I had to skip the trip. Here in Mountain View, California we've been working with EPA to set up a public meeting later this month to update the community on the groundwater and indoor air sampling activities along Evandale Avenue. Presumably that meeting has been delayed as well. One by one, I'm beginning to hear that national meetings I've been planning to attend are being postponed or cancelled because federal employee participants are "locked out" by the failure of Congress to appropriate funds. The Federal shutdown is having a growing impact on environmental cleanup and other programs, but the people whose job it is to report on these things are themselves on forced furlough. Therefore, I'm collecting information about ACTIVITIES NOT HAPPENING because of the lack of appropriations. These may include meetings, grant offerings or payments, studies, or actual physical remediation. I'm also interested in examples of how the shutdown in imposing NEW COSTS. For example, canceling my trip has stuck me with a $200 airline change fee. Please e-mail me with your experiences. It's important that people know that the shutdown has significant environmental consequences.
