Whirlpool: Solvent Leak Won't Delay Redevelopment Of Vacant Plant By Jeff Arnold Fort Smith Times Record (AR) October 8, 2013Contamination cleanup at the Fort Smith Whirlpool site and lawsuits filed against the Michigan-based company won’t delay redevelopment of the 152-acre property, a Whirlpool representative said Monday. A plume of trichloroethylene, or TCE, now a known carcinogen, leaked into groundwater at the plant, then later into a neighborhood to the north, affecting about two dozen homes. The chemical compound was used at Whirlpool as a degreasing solvent between the late 1960s and early 1980s, according to the company. In 2001, Whirlpool and the state came to an agreement for remediation efforts, according to the ADEQ. The Fort Smith plant closed June 29, 2012. ...
