Group in opposition to ordinance amendment Others say city training sites could lead to jobs, development by Mary Katherine Murphy & Abbi Overfelt Laurinburg Exchange (NC) November 17, 2013LAURINBURG — A Scotland County commissioner says he has mobilized a group of Laurinburg residents who live near the proposed site of a military training facility to sign a petition that will be sent up the chain of command at Ft. Bragg if it goes unheeded at Tuesday’s City Council meeting. John Alford says anyone who cares about the nation’s military would never participate in the training proposed by the Gryphon Group if they knew about the hazardous chemicals that seeped into the ground when the site housed Abbott Laboratories. It’s information he plans to use in an attempt to keep the council from voting to allow military training facilities in Industrial zones — and keep such facilities away from his neighborhood — but state environmental officials say that the site will not cause harm to anyone who inhabits it as long as guidelines set in a “brownfield” agreement are followed. ...
