Cleanup completed at Rockland brownfield site Mid-Hudson News (NY) November 18, 2013ORANGEBURG - The State Department of Environmental Conservation has announced that action has been completed to address contamination at the Orangeburg Commons site at 170 Route 303 in Orangeburg. The almost 16-site was a portion of the Orangeburg Pipe property which began manufacturing pipe in the 1890s. The site was reported to be used primarily for storage, but pipe that did not meet specifications was also disposed of there. Prior to 1946, the pipe was manufactured by impregnating paper fiber cylinders with coal tar pitch. From 1946 through 1970, a paper/ asbestos mixture was used to make the cylinders. After 1970, a fibrous, magnesium oxide mineral replaced asbestos in the process. After manufacturing ceased in 1973, most of the manufacturing facility on the adjacent property was destroyed by fire with the remaining structures reportedly demolished and deposited at the project site. ...
