DEC seeks public input on Olean brownfield cleanup By Christopher Michel Olean Times Herald (NY) November 23, 2013OLEAN — State environmental authorities are soliciting feedback on a proposal for the continued cleanup of three sites in the city’s brownfields. From now until Dec. 30, the public can review plans by Olean Gateway, LLC, to cleanse the sites of contaminants and remove underground utility lines. The plans are available for viewing at the Olean Public Library. The three properties, which take up approximately 60 acres of the 500- acre brownfield area in northern Olean, are owned by Exxon Mobil Corp. ...According to a copy of the proposed plan, Olean Gateway intends to remove, clean or cap 94,500 feet of abandoned subsurface piping on the lots; excavate 5,400 cubic yards of contaminated soil; and install soil vapor extraction units to remove volatile organic compounds from the sites. At the third site, a 24.37-acre plot, another 4,200 yards of soil contaminated by lead, arsenic and petroleum products would be cleansed as well. ...
