City wants public input on use of brownfields area

OLEAN - A 500-acre section of north Olean has sat unused for decades  
with no prospects of redevelopment.

But with renewed interests in seeing the brownfields again become a  
hub of economic and industrial activity in the city, those overseeing  
the site’s potential revitalization are asking for the community’s help.

The public is invited to attend a workshop from 6 to 8 p.m. March 12  
at the John J. Ash Community Center on North Barry Street to discuss  
what the future may hold for the city’s northwest quadrant where the  
brownfields are located. Brownfields are vacant industrial lots where  
contamination has impeded redevelopment.

“It’s been a while since we brought the public together to talk about  
the brownfields,” said Mary George, the city’s Community Development  
coordinator. “Redeveloping the brownfields, which are in a state- 
designated Brownfield Opportunity Area, requires a great deal of  
public participation, and we want to hear the ideas of the community.”
