O’Sullivan’s Island a step closer to remediation after Connecticut awards it $200K

DERBY - Local officials Wednesday hailed a $200,000 state grant that will help revitalize a Brownfield site on O’Sullivan’s Island.

The Board of Aldermen in January voted to close O’Sullivan’s Island to the public because of health concerns over suspected contamination. The closure included Phase III of the recreational Greenway.

Derby is part of the Regional Brownfields Partnership. O’Sullivan’s Island has been a Brownfield site for many years. Despite its name, the strip of land is a peninsula at the confluence of the Naugatuck and Housatonic rivers.
